The complexity of a contemporary building is the most apparent when observed during its construction. While working in architecture I spent a lot of time on construction sites and took a lot of photographs. At first, some of the photographs served as documentation of issues I wanted to discuss with the contractor and others were for my own development as a designer. With each building project there were new conditions and new circumstances, but what became more apparent to me were the moments that felt unique to a particular space and time. These were the moments when elements made space by temporary means. Whether it was during demolition or something made to serve a brief but specific purpose, the conditions were charged. The photographs I began to make were now motivated by trying to understand what makes each moment under these conditions so special.
Ad-hoc Construction
Ad-hoc assemblies, with no purpose other than to accomplish a particular task at hand, appeared, changed and disappeared on a regular basis. Whether at the scale of a door or an entire room, with each one, relationships were created, characters emerged and space was made despite any grand design. Some things were made from whatever what was at hand and others evoked a purpose.
Selective Demolition
Selective demolition is the careful disassembly of a building. Although it can be done in number of ways its intent is to remove unwanted elements while carefully preserving others. Layers are peeled back, elements removed, components cut free and openings are made. What is left behind has an undeniable presence and the imprint of what was once there is sometimes the space itself. The markings on a ceiling or a floor where a wall once made contact makes present the space, which the walls at one time enclosed or divided.
